Supporting Literacy With Chicago's Emerald City Theatre

Since 2012, Emerald City Theatre has dedicated its “One Fund” initiative to advancing access to the arts and promoting reading in low-income schools in Chicago. To date, the One Fund has supported 23,500 students and 154 schools with free plays, books, and curriculum connections study guides.

Following previous program implementations, teachers have reported that students demonstrate improved verbal expression, social skills, and emotional expression in addition to improved knowledge and understanding and confidence in their own abilities.

JSSI sponsored Emerald City Theatre’s One Fund to help support the advancement of literacy and the arts for Chicago Public Schools students. The JSSI team joined other friends and partners in the literacy, education, and arts communities to celebrate the success of the initiative with a special evening of food, drinks and fun. The evening, which fell on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, congratulated partner schools and recognized organizations and individuals who support literacy and the arts through their investment in Emerald City Theatre and its One Fund initiative.
